5 Videos on the Science of Love

February 2, 2016 by Justin Lehmiller

For your viewing (and learning) pleasure this Valentine’s Day weekend, here’s a playlist of five of my favorite videos on the science of love. These videos span quite the range of topics, including what actually goes on inside our brains when we experience love and heartbreak, as well as scientifically-based tips on what you can do to improve your own relationship. Enjoy!

1.) The Secret to Desire in a Long-Term Relationship – We expect a lot from our spouses. We want them to be both a passionate lover and a best friend simultaneously. We also want them to offer us comfort and security, while continually offering constant novelty and surprise. In this video, therapist Esther Perel talks about the importance of balancing all of these competing needs and desires in order to sustain a healthy long-term relationship.

2.) The Marriage Hack –What can you do to keep your relationship healthy and strong over time? In this video, Dr. Eli Finkel describes a simple intervention that takes just 21 minutes per year that could potentially alter the trajectory of your relationship for the better.

3.) Why We Love, Why We Cheat – In this video, Dr. Helen Fisher describes the evolution of love, its neurochemical foundation, and the role in plays in human life. Dr. Fisher also discusses how antidepressant usage affects brain chemistry and the potentially disastrous implications this could have for our love lives

4.) Is It Lust or Love? – What’s the difference between lust and love? Dr. Terri Orbuch explains below how you can tell them apart and what you can do to recreate lust in a long-term, loving relationship.

5.) Breakups Don’t Have to Leave You Broken – Breakups are never fun, but they don’t have to be the end of the world either, according to Dr. Gary Lewandowski. For people struggling to get over a breakup, it turns out that there are several practical steps you can take to enhance your coping ability and move on faster.
