More than 4 in 10 men report having experienced at least one sexual difficulty in the past year. Experiencing difficulties during sex can be very distressing, and they can sometimes even lead men to avoid sex entirely due to feelings of shame and embarrassment.

Fortunately, most difficulties can be resolved without the need for intensive therapy or medication. In fact, for many bedroom problems, you can often resolve them—and boost performance at the same time—by taking matters into your own hands. Literally.

Research suggests that incorporating sex toys into your masturbation routine can be therapeutic. Studies show that male sex toy users report better erectile function, better orgasmic function, more intercourse satisfaction, and more sexual desire [1]. Further, masturbation sleeves and strokers have been shown to be an effective treatment for both premature ejaculation and delayed orgasm through building better ejaculatory control [2,3].

The Handy

Advances in sex toy technology may make it easier than ever to tap into these benefits by giving you more precise control over sensation, while also opening up new possibilities for pleasure. Enter The Handy.

The Handy, made by Norwegian company Sweet Tech, is an automatic stroker designed for male self-pleasure. It’s a one-size-fits-all device that can be coupled with your masturbation sleeve of choice, with different sleeves optimized to mimic realistic sensations of different partnered activities, from oral sex to intercourse.

Many men masturbate in ways that do not replicate the kinds of sensations they get during partnered sex. This can potentially make it more challenging to stay aroused and to reach orgasm during sex because the sensations may feel completely different from the ones you’re used to when you usually orgasm. For this reason, as part of many treatment programs, sex therapists will often advise male clients to engage in self-pleasure in ways that more closely mirror what happens when they’re with a partner.

The Handy not only provides an experience that feels more like partnered sex, but it also puts you in control. With a high level of precision, you can customize the stroke length, stroke zone (where the stroke starts and ends), and stroke speed (ranging from 32mm/second up to a maximum speed of 400mm/second).

The Handy is optimized for practicing “edging,” which occurs when you get to the brink of orgasm, stop until the sensation subsides, then resume and repeat. Edging is one way of building up sexual stamina and orgasmic control. When you get close to orgasm, you can hit the power button to immediately stop the device—and then resume whenever you’re ready.

The Handy also enables users to add new dimensions to solo play. For example, it can be synched to videos to mimic what is happening on screen – and it even works with VR. There’s a growing list of official Handy content partners to make it simple for anyone curious about the interactive video experience to try it out, with no special tech skills needed. For a non-explicit demonstration of Handy’s ability to synch with motions in a video, see here.

It can also add novelty to partnered play, if desired. For example, The Handy can be remote-controlled over wi-fi from anywhere in the world, making this toy a unique way to stay connected in long-distance relationships.

Given that we’re currently in the midst of Masturbation Month, now is a perfect time to explore new forms of self-pleasure and advances in sex toy technology. Whether you’re simply looking to mix up your masturbation routine or enhance your sexual performance (or both!), check out The Handy.
