Study Abroad With Me in Amsterdam for a Course on Sex and Culture

September 13, 2019 by Justin Lehmiller

I’m excited to announce a unique study abroad opportunity in conjunction with the Sexual Health Alliance. We are offering a one-week study abroad program in Amsterdam focused on sex and culture, which will take place in May 2020! Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

This course offers participants the chance to perform a comparative analysis of sexual attitudes and behaviors in the Netherlands and the United States. The Netherlands provides a fascinating cultural contrast because, in addition to having the best sexual health outcomes in the world, the Dutch were among the first to legalize same-sex marriage, they have mandated comprehensive sex education, and they have decriminalized and regulated the sale of sex. We will explore the Dutch model of sexuality in depth and consider what we can learn from it.

This course is designed for sex educators, therapists, and researchers at all levels, from students to professionals. In addition to learning from me (someone who has taught academic study abroad courses in Amsterdam for years), there will be a variety of guest speakers, including local sex educators. We will also go on several sexuality-related excursions, including a visit to the Prostitution Information Center, where there will be a presentation and Q&A with a local sex worker.

Red light district in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

You will also be immersed in Dutch culture through a bicycle tour of the city, a food tour of an authentic Dutch neighborhood, a sunset cruise along the canals of Amsterdam, and more.

Twenty AASECT continuing education credits are included in the course, so this is an opportunity to earn your CEs while visiting another part of the world and broadening your global perspective.

If you’re interested in participating, you can find full details on the program and registration here. Early registration is highly encouraged because we are working with a very limited class size in order to provide a more personalized experience.

Hope to see you in Amsterdam!

UPDATE: The first section is SOLD OUT, so a second has been added due to high demand. Reserve your spot now!
