Video: Fight For Your Right (To Be A Sex Scientist)

July 29, 2016 by Justin Lehmiller

“It’s a very, very risky field to be in. Our labs are periodically shut down when we try and ask questions that someone didn’t want us to ask. It’s a problem. You will have to fight for your right to be able to study. The payoff is that if you are willing to fight the fight, you can discover things about the human body that are unknown.” – Dr. Nicole Prause

Being a successful sex researcher is–and always has been–a tough business. Sex research has a lot of vocal critics who aren’t comfortable with the work we’re doing, some of whom have actually gone to great lengths to try and scare us away from studying certain topics! One person who knows this all too well is sexual psychophysiologist, Dr. Nicole Prause.

In a recent installment in the NOVA series The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers, Dr. Prause sheds some light on what it’s really like to work in such a controversial field and why she thinks the rewards far outweigh the risks. Check out the video below to learn more.

If you want to learn even more about Dr. Prause, including what she’s currently working on in her lab and what advice she has to offer to budding sex scientists, check out this interview I conducted with her on the blog.
