Become An Amateur Sex Scientist With The Kinsey Reporter App

May 9, 2013 by Justin Lehmiller

Kinsey Reporter is a new smartphone app that lets people around the world anonymously record the details of their sex lives any time, any place. This app is availablfor free on both Apple and Android mobile platforms and is overseen by a joint partnership between The Kinsey Institute and the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing.

Users can report on a wide range of sexual behaviors and share them in exhaustive detail by selecting the appropriate tags. For example, if you wanted to enter a recent sexual activity, you could use tags to indicate how many people were involved, their genders, how you know each other (e.g., friend, romantic partner, prostitute), the type of contraception used (if applicable), the specific sex acts that were performed, and how you felt about it afterward (e.g., satisfied, disappointed, etc.). The app also allows users to report on sexual assaults and fetishes, as well as certain types of intimate activities, including flirts and public displays of affection (PDAs).

But it gets even better–users will also be able to explore the data submitted and see how people in other parts of the world are “getting busy.” However, you won’t necessarily be able to see what others are doing right now because the data are queued and released in batches in order to protect the anonymity of participants, especially those from communities with limited populations. To further protect your privacy, the program only collects data on approximate location, not your exact GPS coordinates.

If Kinsey Reporter catches on, it has the potential to yield a treasure trove of data on our sexual and romantic lives and will allow us to explore cultural variations that have historically been very difficult to study. Consider doing your part for the science of sex and give this app a try. Plus, an app that lets you learn about sex is indisputably more fun than Angry Birds any day of the week.
