Sex Question Friday: Indicators of Penis Size, Sleeping After Sex, And The Orgasmic Gold Medal Winner

Every Friday on the blog, I answer people’s questions about sex, love, and relationships. This week’s questions concern penis size, what men and women do after sex, and the record for most female orgasms during a single sexual event.

Are there any anatomical structures that estimate or show penis size? Like hands or feet?

There is a commonly held belief that a man’s hands and feet can reveal what he’s packing “down there.” However, there is no research to support this idea. For instance, I found one study in which men’s shoe size was compared to the size of their penis (as measured by a two independent physicians), but the results failed to reveal any association [1]. I couldn’t find any research showing that the overall size of the hand approximates penis size either, but some research suggests that the size of a man’s ring finger relative to his index finger can provide some clue about penile length. Can penis size be predicted from any other body structures? Yes. Penis size is positively correlated with height and negatively correlated with weight [2]. What this means is that taller and skinner guys tend to be more well-endowed. Just keep in mind that while there’s a correlation here, height and weight aren’t reliable indicators of penis size in all cases, so don’t make too many assumptions based on the way a guy looks!

Why do guys always get tired after sex? And why do women want to cuddle afterward?

For whatever reason, the popular media likes to perpetuate the idea that our bedrooms are full or sleepy men and disappointed women. However, this one isn’t true either. In fact, research finds that men and women are equally likely to report being the first one to fall asleep after sex [3]! See here for a complete write-up of this study.

How many orgasms can a woman have in an hour?

As I have written in previous articles, women are often capable of reaching multiple orgasms. Thus, it’s possible for some women to have several orgasms in a relatively short amount of time. As far as I could find in published research, the most orgasms ever documented in a single sexual event for a woman is a mind-boggling 134 [4]! For men, the record is a paltry 16. Of course, these numbers are highly unusual, and it would be the rare person who could even come close to achieving them, so please don’t try to measure up. But there you have it.
