Fifth Blogiversary of Sex and Psychology

December 14, 2016 by Justin Lehmiller

Sex and Psychology is officially five years old! When I first started this blog in 2011, I had no idea what kind of response it would receive, but I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. I am so pleased that Sex and Psychology has become such a widely read and referenced resource for scientifically-based information on sex and sexuality.

Thank YOU for everything you do to support the site, including reading and sharing the articles, submitting your questions, and weighing in with your comments. Sex and Psychology is the single most rewarding aspect of my professional career and I just can’t imagine my life without it. I hope you’re looking forward to another year of great sex [research] as much as I am! In the meantime, here are some fun facts and statistics for your reading pleasure.

• Total number of page views in 2016: 2+ million (our best year yet!)

• Current number of social media followers across all channels: 32,500+ (a 25% increase over 2015!)

• Most popular article keyword (aside from sex, of course): a virtual tie between “Orgasm” (included in 98 posts) and “sexual orientation” (included in 97 posts).

• The three most popular questions leading people to Sex and Psychology through search engines in 2016: “What is rimming?” (also the most popular question in 2014 and 2015–clearly people are curious about this topic, so here’s some reading material), “Can your hymen grow back?” (read the answer here), and “How often do couples in their 40s have sex?” (read the answer here).

• Most unusual search term leading people to Sex and Psychology this year: It’s hard to pick just one, but I’m fascinated that dozens of people landed on my site by searching for “Walking Dead sex toys.” Believe it or not, zombie dildos are indeed a thing and I’ve blogged about them and other unusual sex toys before (see here).

• Most read edition of Sex Question Friday published in 2016: The Sex Lives of Older Adults

• Most watched sex research video on the blog in 2016: The Science Of Attraction (also the most watched video in 2015). The runner-up was Sexuality and Disability

• Most read infographic on the blog in 2016: What It’s Like To Be a Porn Star

Stay tuned for a countdown of the ten most read articles of the year. There are some truly fascinating entries on the list!

Thank you again for your continued support and readership of the blog!
