Fighting for Sex Science

December 2, 2016 by Justin Lehmiller

“I’m a scientist and I’m going to do it on my own terms… I’m doing exactly the work they told me not to do in exactly the way it should be done, and it feels amazing.” – Dr. Nicole Prause

Sex research is a tough business to be in. This field has more than its fair share of critics, some of whom have gone to great lengths to intimidate sex scientists with the goal of shutting down their labs or scaring them away from studying certain topics! If there’s one person who understands this better than anyone else, it’s sexual psychophysiologist Dr. Nicole Prause.

In the PopTech video below, Dr. Prause talks about the threats and harassment she has endured as a sex scientist, as well as some of the resistance and roadblocks she has run into in the process of carrying out her research agenda in an academic setting. This ultimately led her to begin her own private start-up company, Liberos, a place where she could work as a sex scientist without being without being subject to arbitrary research prohibitions.

This video also offers a look at some of the current things she’s working on in her lab, which includes identifying new ways of using sexual stimulation to enhance sexual health.

If you want to learn even more about Dr. Prause, including the advice she has to offer to future sex scientists, check out this interview I conducted with her on the blog.
